Daphne du Maurier: Double Exposure – Part 2: The Blue Lenses and The Little Photographer
Here at the Daphne du Maurier website, we want to remind you that there are more treats in store this afternoon (Sunday 10th March) when BBC Radio 4 brings us three more programmes as part of the special fortnight of Daphne du Maurier programming.
The afternoon begins at 2.45pm with Opening Lines, the regular Sunday afternoon programme hosted by John Yorke. This week, he talks about two of Daphne du Maurier's short stories – The Blue Lenses and The Little Photographer. Contributing to the programme are Justine Picardie and Sarah Dunant, both of whom have an expert knowledge of Daphne du Maurier and her work. The two short stories being discussed today are, perhaps, slightly less well-known ones. Both are preoccupied with 'seeing' and share themes that are very characteristic of Daphne's writing – truth, deception, jealousy, and obsession. There will be so much to say about these stories, and we are looking forward to hearing it.
At 3pm, these two short stories come to life in brand new dramatisations. In The Blue Lenses, an eye operation changes Marda West's life, and in The Little Photographer, Madame la Marquise is enthralled by a photographer! But as is so often the case with Daphne du Maurier's writing, nothing works out as one would expect.
To round off this glorious du Maurier afternoon, Octavia Bright presents her popular programme, Open Book, at 4pm. Today, Octavia discusses Daphne du Maurier, the novelist and the themes of her work with a panel of three distinguished writers.
